Leadership Training and Development
Challenge
New managers at a high-tech company did not have a training program to help them assume their responsibilities. Although the company offered some leadership courses, new and existing managers attended sporadically or not at all. Company executives and Human Resources wanted to offer timely, comprehensive new manager training to increase their support and skill development, and reduce the number and cost of employee relations issues.
Solution
- Designed and facilitated new manager training that was offered two to three times per year in a blended learning format for all US locations.
- Included company-specific courses such as Manager Responsibilities, Performance Management, Managing within the Law, Financial Responsibilities, Hiring and Interviewing, Team Building, Manager Communication, Coaching, and Conflict Management.
- Provided coaches who helped participants select appropriate courses based on their experience, and offered support throughout the program.
- Distributed progress reports to participants’ senior and direct managers, who formally recognized participants upon program completion.
Results
- New Manager Training classes were consistently filled to capacity, and received high participant ratings.
- 97 new managers successfully completed the program in two years.
- Post-program self-evaluations showed a 63% increase in manager confidence and ability to execute on the five key management responsibilities when compared to pre-program self-evaluations.
- Employee Relations and Legal departments reported a significant reduction in new manager employee relations and EEO issues.
